What is dry ice blasting?
Dry ice blasting (also known as CO₂ blasting or dry ice cleaning) is an industrial cleaning process in which dry ice pellets are blasted onto contaminated surfaces using compressed air. The so-called thermal shock effect detaches deposits from the substrate through the extreme temperature difference of −78.5 °C: quickly, thoroughly and without residue.
During dry ice blasting, the CO₂ sublimates directly into gas, leaving no residue whatsoever. No water, no chemicals, no abrasives. This makes dry ice cleaning particularly suitable for sensitive production equipment, electrical components and food processing businesses.
Unlike conventional cleaning methods such as sandblasting or high-pressure cleaning, dry ice blasting can in many cases be carried out without dismantling the equipment. This minimises production downtime and considerably reduces the overall cost of your industrial cleaning.
Dry ice blasting vs. conventional cleaning
Why manufacturing companies are switching to dry ice cleaning, and the advantages dry ice blasting offers over sandblasting, high-pressure cleaning and manual cleaning.
| Criterion | Dry ice blasting | Sandblasting | High-pressure cleaning | Manual cleaning |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Residues | None (CO₂ sublimates) | Blasting media residue | Water residue | Cleaning agent residue |
| Chemicals required | None | None | Sometimes | Sometimes |
| Residue-free | Yes | No | No (water) | No |
| Dismantling required | Not required | Usually required | Usually required | Often required |
| Suitable for electronics | Yes | No | No | Limited |

| Food businesses | HACCP-compliant | No | Limited | Conditionally suitable |
Why dry ice blasting is the better cleaning solution
Dry ice cleaning has long ceased to be a niche process in industry. These benefits explain why food, pharmaceutical and manufacturing businesses are increasingly replacing conventional cleaning methods with dry ice blasting.
Chemical-free
No solvents, no pickling agents, no water. The CO₂ sublimates without residue, ideal for food, pharmaceutical and cleanroom environments.
No dismantling required
Equipment is cleaned in its installed state: no disassembly, no assembly time, no risk of rust from moisture.
Precise & gentle on the substrate
The thermal shock effect removes deposits with pinpoint precision without attacking the substrate. Electronics, paintwork and seals remain intact.
Up to 80% time saving
Compared directly with manual cleaning or high-pressure methods, dry ice blasting considerably reduces the time required, with better results.
Audit-ready documentation
Complete cleaning report with photo documentation. HACCP-suitable: directly usable for quality and hygiene audits.
Professional equipment
Latest-generation dry ice blasters, our own compressed air equipment, PPE. We are fully self-sufficient: no third-party infrastructure required.

FAQ: everything about dry ice cleaning in Hamburg
Answers to the most common questions from plant managers and industrial buyers.
Can’t find your question?0800 0010982 · Mon to Fri, 7:00 to 18:00In dry ice blasting, dry ice pellets are blasted at high speed onto the surface to be cleaned. The thermal shock effect loosens the contamination and the CO₂ immediately sublimates into gas, leaving no residue whatsoever.
In many cases, yes. Dry ice blasting allows equipment to be cleaned while running or during a brief shutdown, without dismantling.
Yes. The process leaves no chemical residues, is HACCP-compliant and is suitable for use in food and pharmaceutical businesses.
Oil, grease, paint, lacquers, adhesives, mould, soot, bitumen, corrosion protection products, food residues and many other deposits.
Costs depend on the size of the site, the degree of soiling and accessibility. We charge port facilities, container terminals and large machinery on a day-rate basis, and food production equipment or individual machines at a project-based fixed price. There are no additional travel costs within the Hamburg city area. Send us photos or a short briefing and we will get back to you within 24 hours with a cost estimate.
Within the Hamburg city area and the immediate surroundings (Norderstedt, Pinneberg, Ahrensburg, Wedel, Glinde, Halstenbek), we are usually ready to deploy within 24 to 48 hours for urgent enquiries. We coordinate scheduled maintenance cleaning flexibly, including at weekends or during the night shift window, so that your production does not come to a standstill. For jobs in Kiel, Lübeck, Flensburg or more distant locations in Schleswig-Holstein, we typically plan 5 to 10 working days’ lead time.
Yes. We have experience with container terminals, port cranes, conveyor belts, reefer containers and components from marine equipment suppliers. Dry ice is particularly useful in a port environment: no waste water enters the harbour basin, no chemical concentrates have to be disposed of and no residual moisture remains on salt-laden metal surfaces. On request, we work with a Risk Assessment & Method Statement (RAMS) in line with the terminal operators’ safety requirements.
Yes. Under Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008, CO2 is approved as food additive E290. It sublimates residue-free and often makes it possible to clean roasting machines, conveyor lines, fish processing equipment and bakery production lines during operation. We work according to HACCP principles and document every job with a before-and-after report, which simplifies your hygiene audits.
Indirectly, yes. Salty port air promotes corrosion wherever salt, dust and moisture settle on metal surfaces. Conventional water-based cleaning makes the problem worse, because residual moisture accelerates corrosion. Dry ice blasting removes salt deposits in a dry process, leaving no residue: the surface can be put back into service immediately and offers no point of attack for subsequent corrosion.
In Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein, our focus is on port and logistics infrastructure (cranes, conveyor systems, containers), the maritime industry and marine equipment suppliers, food and beverage production (coffee roasters, fish processing, bakery products), mechanical engineering and metalworking, die-casting and steel plants, power generation and refineries, as well as fire and water damage restoration in commercial properties.
